August 23-25, 2024
Pioneer Sportsmen, Inc., Dunbarton, NH

The 2024 Aiming For Zero (AFZ) Falling Steel Match sponsored by Ruger was an incredible success, bringing together competitors, volunteers, and supporters for a meaningful cause: raising awareness and funds to prevent veteran suicide. Hosted at Pioneer Sportsmen, Inc., the event welcomed 154 competitors, staff, and guests to a weekend of exciting steel target shooting—all in support of AFZ’s mission. The event fostered a strong sense of camaraderie, uniting individuals who share a common passion for shooting sports and a commitment to supporting veterans and their families. It wasn’t just about the competition; it was about coming together to make a difference, honor those who have served, and raise critical funds for a cause that saves lives.

Event Highlights

This event was a testament to the dedication of shooters, volunteers, and supporters alike:

    • 196 steel targets set the stage for competition, requiring sharp focus and precision.
    • 154 competitors from all backgrounds participated, shooting a total of 164 guns.
    • A hard-working team of 21 staff members contributed 69 collective “staff days,” ensuring everything ran smoothly.

Fundraising Success

    • The weekend was not only a thrilling competition but also a financial success:
      • Gross fundraising reached an impressive $24,000, with significant contributions from match fees, raffle ticket sales, and side matches.
      • One incredibly generous donor contributed $10,000, making a significant impact on the overall funds raised.

Event Impact

One of the most poignant moments of the event occurred when a competitor shared her story. Her father, a veteran, took his own life when she was a young child. She competed in the AFZ match to honor his memory, reminding everyone of the very real impact suicide has on veterans’ families. Stories like hers underscore the importance of AFZ’s mission and the power of community events like this.

Interviews with other participants echoed this sentiment—many were grateful for the opportunity to support such a critical cause while enjoying a day of camaraderie and competition.

Future Projects and Plans

The funds raised at the 2024 AFZ Falling Steel Match will enable future projects aimed at veteran suicide prevention, including awareness campaigns, veteran support groups, and continued funding for AFZ’s critical work. These initiatives will expand AFZ’s outreach and ensure that more veterans and their families receive the support they need.
